Rehoming Your German Shepherd
Making the decision to rehome your beloved German Shepherd is never easy, but sometimes circumstances may leave you with no other choice. We understand that this can be an emotional and challenging time for you. Before reaching out to us, please consider the following options:
-
Behavioural Problems: Consider seeking assistance from your local training club or a canine behaviourist. Many behavioural issues can be addressed or resolved with professional guidance. Our trainer may also be able to help you.
-
Reach Out to Friends or Family: Ask your close ones if they would be willing to provide a new home for your dog.
-
Consult with Your Veterinarian: Your veterinarian might be able to help with any problems you’re facing or might know someone looking to adopt a pet.
-
Contact the Original Breeder: If your German Shepherd came from a registered breeder and has pedigree papers, reach out to the breeder for potential rehoming support.
At German Shepherd Rescue New South Wales, we strongly advise against advertising your German Shepherd as “free to a good home” on platforms like Gumtree or other classified websites. Ensure there is an amount on the advert and if you find the right home you can then give the dog away. These online platforms lack the necessary verification to ensure a safe and suitable home for your dog.
If you are considering rehoming your dog, please read the following information, complete the Dog Information Form below, and we will be in touch to discuss your needs. It is essential to be completely honest about all aspects of your dog’s behaviour and health, as this helps us find the best possible new home for them.
-
Our Process: We don’t have our own kennels or shelter, which means we might not always be able to provide immediate assistance.
-
Meet your dog: If possible, one of our volunteers will come and meet your dog to assess it for rehoming.
-
Urgent Situations: If you feel your situation is urgent, please reach out to us so we can explore your options together.
-
Paperwork: Please forward any relevant paperwork, such as microchip certificates, vaccination certificates, desexing certificates, vet history, and proof of ownership – Certificate of Registration from your Council.
Completing the form below, sending copies of paperwork and photos initiates the process of information gathering. However, please be aware that until we have found the right home for your dog and the Adoption Form and Change of Owner form have been completed, you are still the legal owner of your dog. Our team is here to support you throughout this journey and ensure the best possible outcome for your furry friend.
